Diplo launches SoundCloud account supporting new music

Mad Decent head honcho Diplo has launched a SoundCloud account hosting music he approves of.

Aptly titled Diplo Approved, he took to Twitter to let his followers know about the new account, where he’ll re-post any tunes that tickle his fancy.

Only a few tracks appear on there at the moment, including a Genesis remix of Schoolboy Q and Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Collard Greens’ collaboration, Emoh Instead’s ‘Say So’ EP, a remix of Slum Village and ‘Suburbs’ by Norwegian singer Mr Little Jeans.

Check out Diplo Approved here.

Bonobo digs deep for an Essential Mix debut you should hear

Basking in the critical success of his most recent album The North Borders, Simon Green AKABonobo has been riding high well into 2014, following a massive 140-date tour and plans to headline the iconic Alexandra Palace in London in November. This past weekend was especially big for the UK producer, performing at Coachella Music Festival on the same evening as the airing of his debut Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1.

While Bonobo’s approach to the mix was to simply play out the “broader spectrum” of music he enjoys, one quick glance at the tracklist below is evidence enough of his seasoned selection skills. Soulful cuts from artists like Awanto 3, Dauwd, Cuthead, Jimpster and Romare sound out among deeper, broodier tracks from Mano Le Tough, Ten Walls and Throwing Snow. Aside from showing his home label Ninja Tune some love by highlighting music from label-mates Kelis and Illum Sphere, Green showcases some of his own work, including his remix of Maya Jane Coles’ Something in the Air. Check it out below.

Let’s Get Frankie Knuckles ‘Your Love’ to Number One

Paying tribute to the “Godfather” in the finest way possible, fans have been urged to purchase Frankie Knuckles seminal track “Your Love” aiming to get the Chicago legend back into the Official Singles Chart. The ’80′s tune originally peaked at number 59, however yesterday the track made its Top 40 debut at a solid number #29 thanks to a successful Facebook campaign.

Knuckles, aged 59, passed away at home in Chicago on Monday last week following complications. He had played at Ministry Of Sound in London just the Saturday before and will be remembered as an icon who helped build a style of dance music that revolutionised club culture, not only in the ’70s and ’80s but that still clearly resonates around the world today.

Frankie’s last UK Top 40 hit was “Whadda You Want (From Me) FT Adeva”, reached Number #36 in 1995, while his most successful UK track was 1991’s Top 20 hit “The Whistle Song”, which peaked at Number #17. The campaign has been a huge success so far in the UK (with now over 30 000 followers) so lets see how it goes with the support of the rest of the world.

If you feel like contributing to this fantastic legacy left behind by the Godfather and want to hear his track played on BBC Radio 1 then click here for the Facebook pageThe station actually managed to dig up an epic set recorded at Pacha back in 2000 that they have been streaming online before eventually broadcasting it, a first in the Essential Mix’s history.

RIP Frankie Knuckles

Daniel Avery BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix

Daniel Avery Drone

After releasing his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Drone Logic’ in October last year, main room resident at London’s Fabric Daniel Avery has stepped up for the Essential Mix over the weekend. Avery is a relative newcomer on the rise and has jumped into the spotlight of BBC Radio 1 providing two hours of of upfront electro, techno and everything in between.

According to Avery, the mix is reflective of the sets he plays at Fabric. Starting off with tracks from The House in the Woods and an Avery remix of Factory Floor, listeners are eased into the mix, wading through a spectacle of echoing sounds before being grounded by the calming bass-line of Simian Mobile Disco and Roman Flügel’s Hachinoko. From there, the mix dives into deep, often acid-laced techno selections from names like Nautiluss, Minor Science, Radio Slave, Barnt and more. Obviously it would be rude not to include a few of his own works from Drone Logic as well, playing around with some of the album’s vocal samples as they make sporadic cameos throughout. Listen to the London producers Essential Mix below (track list included).

Daniel Avery BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix Tracklist:

5 Cottam – Harsh Side Effects [MACHINE LABEL]

Wave Racer Shredding It With Aussie-Packed Diplo And Friends Mix

There’s no need to extrapolate on the recent exploits of young Future Classic production wizard Wave Racer. It seems like only yesterday that we released Stoney Roads Volume 1, yet the last 6 months have been a real whirlwind of success for the Sydney-sider. Suffice to say he’s bloody killing it, and has just climbed another rung on his way to world domination by posting his first Diplo and Friends mix from the weekend. It’s a squeaky, synth riddled, gem of a mix that highlights the best of the drippy jap beat jersey genre that is really kicking off at the moment.

He kicks things off with max power by dropping Cosmo’s Midnight’s sick and ‘very rare’ bootleg of Destiny’s Child’s ‘Say My Name’, and turbo charges the mix with some exciting new material from FC stablemate Basenji and Perth’s Sable. Throw in some other flip releases from the likes of Trippy Turtle, 813, Salva, then going all Dolphin Park on us with the crazy ‘Oooops’ from Drippy Dolphin, and you’ve got yourself a super fun mix that is guaranteed to have you bopping away with a smile on your dial.

This caps off what must have been a fairly memorable week for the youngster who played a string of shows at SXSW. Keep it up sport!

Stream the First Track from Fort Romeau’s New EP

Back in January, Fort Romeau shared news of a forthcoming EP, Her Dream. Today, the three-track effort is being officially released, and the London-based house producer has elected to stream its lead cut, “I Knew.” Much like his past efforts, Her Dream finds Fort Romeau crafting relatively relaxed rhythms, but there is one notable change—the label releasing the music. Though much of his past work has seen the light of day via Ghostlyand its Spectral Sound imprint, Fort Romeau’s new EP is being issued via Germany’s Live at Robert Johnson. The title track was shared with the world a couple of weeks back, but “I Knew” was just unveiled, and can be heard below.

Future Music Festival Asia cut short following deaths

The final day of Future Music Festival Asia was canceled after a number of attendees died at the event, reportedly from drug overdoses.

The exact death toll is not entirely clear, but may be as high as six, with three more attendees in critical condition. An official statement from the festival disputes initial reports that five people had died onsite, saying “we can confirm that one death, and not five, took place on festival grounds on March 14.” The Star, meanwhile, puts the number at six, reporting: “One person died on the spot in Bukit Jalil while another died on the way to the hospital. Four others died at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC ) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital (HUKM).”The Star attributes the deaths to “methamphetamine overdose.”

Future Music Festival Asia say they pulled the plug in “the interest of public safety” and “to help in the on-going investigation.” They promise to announce details on ticket refunds within the next week.

Taking place in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur, Future Music Festival Asia is an offshoot of Australia’s Future Music Festival. This year’s event included acts like Deadmau5, Pharrell, Paul Van Dyk and Eric Prydz.
